Nias (Nias language Tano Niha) is an island located in the west of the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The island is inhabited by a majority of the tribe Nias (Ono Niha) who still has a megalithic culture. This area is an important tourist attraction such as surfing (surfing), traditional house, dive, jump rocks.
The island with an area of 5625 km ² is inhabited 700,000.
This is the religion of the majority Protestant areas. Nias is now divided into four districts and one city, namely Nias, South Nias regency, West Nias, North Nias and Gunungsitoli.
At December 26, 2004, the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake occurred in the island's west coast that led to the tsunami as high as 10 feet in the area and Mandrehe Sirombu. Fatalities due to this incident amounted to 122 people and hundreds of families homeless.
On March 28, 2005, the island was again shaken by an earthquake, was believed to be an aftershock following the incident in December 2004, but now the incident was the second strongest earthquake in the world since 1965. At least 638 people were reported killed and hundreds of buildings destroyed.
Almost no public housing buildings across the island of Nias, no damage, the quake.
According to the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Agency (BRR) Representative Nias, the disaster has led 13,000 houses destroyed, 24,000 homes damaged, and about 34,000 homes with minor damage. A total of 12 ports and harbors were destroyed, 403 damaged bridges and 800 km of district roads and 266 km of provincial roads were destroyed. A total of 723 schools and places of worship damaged 1938.
